Life Update - April 16, 2012
I remember one of the first conversations I had when caveMAN and I got together was that I only needed 2 things from him: 1)Trust and 2)Loyalty.
Trust involved him never lying to me no matter how difficult the truth was to hear. That I would be more hurt with the lie than the truth and that if I got mad because of the truth, it was just something he had to deal with.
Loyalty involved him unconditionally always being on my side. That we walked together in life as partners each respecting the others quirks (my kpop obsession in its different forms) and geeky habits (his Magic and StarCraft addiction).
And it with these two characteristics, on top of the many other attributes he possesses that we ended up buying a condo together. A condo that by no means was a settlement. Well loved by a grandmother (할머니 to be exact) for 15 years, it had everything we were looking for; 2 bedroom, 2 full baths, walk-in closet & balcony. Bonus was the foyer, unobstructed view looking EAST and the numerous 8’s in the property numbers. (not a 4 to be found) (For those who don’t know, in Asian cultures, EAST & 8 is good, 4 is bad.)
At our Real Estate agent’s place (who’s been with our family for about 11 transactions) we sat in her newly renovated kitchen with her new fridge and stove reminiscent of a teal coloured Cadillac. She walked us through all the paperwork and after we signed the papers for the purchase agreement he said to me,
“You’re really pretty when you’re worried.”
I looked at him sideways from glaring outside the sliding backdoor overlooking the backyard from the kitchen table wondering what the f*ck did I just do, I said to him,
“I must be gorgeous right now.”

You will be greatly missed. RIP Whitney
Design is not just something you do on a piece of paper.
Design is how you think, how you see, how you act, what you buy, what you own, what you surround yourself with, what you listen to, what you don’t listen to, what you watch, what you don’t watch, so design for me is kind of a way of life and is a substitute for any kind of religion. - Burton KramerI’m double sharing here, I know…but I just love this quote.

Always travel with Emergency Medical Insurance
… especially if you’re Canadian.
I’ve always purchased Emergency Medical Travel Insurance just in case over the last 15 years of solo travel and had never needed to use it till this past week.
BEST.DECISION.EVER.
I had been suffering from what I thought was just a bout of indigestion and was waiting for it to pass, but after 9 hours of vomiting, surrendered and was immediately driven to UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco.
Now, as a Canadian traveling in the US, horror stories about patients requiring medical attention without any health insurance filled my head. I, unfortunately had not read the policy I bought, only that I bought it and didn’t know what limitations I had on it. I was wheeled into Emergency and said, “I’m Canadian and I have medical insurance.”
The nurse attending to me was ironically also Canadian and informed me that it was a combination of the emergency insurance that I had purchased and provincial healthcare (OHIP). I didn’t know the details, only relinquish whatever insurance information the admissions needed from me.
In between the pain and numbness resulting from whatever pain medication they were pumping into me, I thought of the price tag I would have to pay at the end of my duration. Not so much what the total cost would be, but how much more out-of-pocket I would have to put onto my credit card upon discharge.
The till kept ringing in my head as they said CT scan, X-rays, Ultrasound, Admission to the hospital and not to mention all the specialists that came around. There was also talk of possible surgery if it didn’t resolve itself. I was moved to the surgery unit and kept under observation for 4 days.
Over the course of those 4 days, I was contacted by various people from the finance and admissions department as my situation was unique as a traveler. Needless to say, everything was resolved and the bill was sent directly to the insurance company (whoever that was, the emergency medical travel insurer, or provincial - I still was unsure in the end.)
I would guestimate that total would look something like $30,000+.
I looked over my emergency medical travel insurance when I was finally discharged.
As a Canadian resident with provincial healthcare + the emergency insurance policy ($132 annual fee.), my ceiling was $5 million. If I didn’t have provincial healthcare, but bought the policy, my ceiling would’ve been $25,000.
$132 well spent.
I always see people using those ‘God Bless America’ eagle graphics ironically so I thought:
oh man, what if Canadians were equally as loud and overzealous with that sort of blind patriotism
what would our obnoxious graphic representation look like
Shouldn’t the text be: YOUR DEITY OF CHOICE BLESS CANADA?
